Agriculture Division Manager

The Agriculture Division within the Environment and Agriculture Business Line is currently seeking a Division Manager to lead our agriculture practice. This position is ideally located in either Columbus, Ohio or Chelmsford, United Kingdom, although other locations will be considered.


Job Summary

As the Division Manager of the Agriculture Division the candidate will be responsible for leading and growing a ~20M business with ~100 staff located throughout the United Kingdom and United States. The candidate will have a thorough understanding of the trends and opportunities facing the agriculture industry, with a focus on crop projection, formulation science, and climate-smart agriculture. Responsibilities include accountability for profit/loss, developing growth strategies in agriculture and crop protection markets, developing customer relationships, developing new business, providing direction to staff, oversight of research projects and laboratories, and contributing to the growth and continued viability of the organization. The Division Manager prepares and implements short and long-term plans for the organization and manages staff and performance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and execution of the Division’s multi-year business plans that define the business strategy, focus areas, growth expectations, and operational and investment objectives of the Division.
  • Maintain responsibility and accountability for the profit/loss of the organization.
  • Oversee business development efforts for the Division to include relationship development with senior commercial clients and limited Federal Government clients (EPA,USDA).
  • Maintain the highest level of customer satisfaction through the delivery of projects that meet and/or exceed requirements for cost, schedule, and performance.
  • Provide leadership to staff, re-enforcing Battelle policies and providing a sounding board for staff.
  • Perform manpower planning and assure appropriate staffing levels and skill mix commensurate with the business. Managing human resource activities such as developing recruiting strategy and hiring staff, establishing performance goals and appraising performance, and providing opportunities for career development.
  • Plan and initiate the group's IR&D investments and monitor progress to assure consistency with the business thrusts and identified market needs.
  • Develop an intellectual property portfolio to drive business growth.
  • Manage facility and equipment needs including procurement, space requirements and new facility and modification decisions.

    Key Qualifications

    • 10+ years of management responsibilities corresponding to $15+M in annual revenue and over 50 staff.
    • Demonstrated experience in successful business development in agricultural markets with an emphasis on crop protection and commercial clients.
    • Demonstrated experience growing a business – top line and bottom line
    • Previous experience in sales and proposal management and ability to mentor staff in those areas.
    • Demonstrated experience in financial planning and execution of a business strategy
    • Demonstrated experience communicating effectively to top management internally and within client organizations, subcontractors, consultants and staff
    • Proven ability to lead others in the achievement of their goals
    • Capable of traveling up to 25-35% domestically and to Europe (primarily UK)
    • Bachelor’s degree in science or related field with 10+ years of experience working in a technical environment.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in agriculture or related technical field and/or a Master of Business Administration
    • Experience with US and UK agriculture practices
